7/4/11- First Day in Dijon

Hope everyone back in America had a great Fourth of July!

Today was our "official" first day in Dijon. We started the day with petite dejeuner in the hotel lobby, (chocolate filled croissants and baguettes). We then walked to the Burgundy School of Business where we were greeted by our university host who gave a presentation on the trip schedule and local resources and shown the school grounds. During our visit students who had completed their grande e'cole (extra two years of high school), were interviewing with university professors and alumni to receive admission to the school. Of 3000 applicants roughly 300 of the twenty year olds will receive admission. The accepted students may be admitted to one of three programs, a two-year, three-year or four year degree. After the school tour we made our way back to the hotel to prepare for a walking tour of Dijon.

The two hour walking tour was led by a local and it was amazing to see architecture dating back hundreds and sometimes thousands of years. The city of Dijon was first founded in 2 B.C. While viewing the oldest monuments in the area the guide also gave us the history on some of Dijon's more famous architects and sculptors, (See pictures below). Returning to the hotel a large group of students gathered to have lunch. Once finished with our makeshift lunch, (salami, cheese, baguette and wine), we put on bathing suits and caught a bus out to the popular lake just outside the city, Lac Kir.

While getting some sun we played volleyball and soccer with some of the other beachgoers. When we got back to the hotel everyone was pretty exhausted so we called it a day around ten o'clock and we retired to our rooms. Today was a great leisure day, tomorrow we will meet at the university for class lectures and to work on our group projects.
